Short term care is not about building a family, but rather about being a bridge
There is a huge need for short term carers across Sydney. Under the new Permanency Support Program in Out-of-Home-Care in New South Wales, all children who need foster care initially enter short term care. Then within two years, a permanent home needs to be found for the child. This may include restoring them to their birth family, placing them with relatives or kin in a guardianship arrangement, or open adoption.
Short term carers offer children & young people a secure and loving home for the time it takes until a permanent placement is found. This may be for a few weeks up to two years. Many people feel like it would be too hard to provide short term care. They are worried they will get their hearts broken.
What great short term carers understand is that they make a hugely valuable contribution to children and young people’s lives when they are at their most vulnerable. Short term foster care is about the kids who need loving care.
Short term care is not about building a family, but rather about being a safe bridge for children as they navigate a huge transition in their lives. Short term carers come from all age groups and all walks of life. Singles, couples and families offer short term care. As long as you have a spare bedroom, and the willingness to open your heart to children in need, you could become a short term carer.
